The quiet wildlife secret of the east coast

Kumana wraps around the Kumana Villu — a 200-hectare freshwater wetland that draws tens of thousands of nesting and migrating birds. Far fewer jeeps than Yala, and increasingly good chances of leopard sightings.

  • 255+ bird species including pelicans, storks & spoonbills
  • Elephants, crocodiles, spotted deer & wild boar
  • Leopards present — never guaranteed, but rising sightings
  • Hotel pickup & drop-off included

On a Kumana safari

Quiet tracks, wetlands, and wildlife — often with far fewer jeeps than Yala.

Kumana Villu wetland

A 200-hectare freshwater swamp — one of Asia’s great nesting grounds, especially April–July.

255+ bird species

Pelicans, painted storks, spoonbills, herons, ibises, and rare visitors like the black-necked stork.

Elephants & big herds

Asian elephants, spotted deer, sambar, wild boar, and buffalo along lagoons and open scrub.

Leopards & predators

Sri Lankan leopards roam here — never guaranteed, but sightings are rising and often private.

Lagoons & crocodiles

Coastal lagoons and waterholes with mugger crocodiles basking on the banks.

Quiet wilderness tracks

Mangroves, forest patches, and jeep trails where you may see only a handful of other vehicles.

Kumana or Yala?

Both are wonderful. Here's the honest difference.

🐦

Far fewer jeeps

In peak season, Yala can feel crowded. Kumana often has just 10–20 vehicles in the whole park.

🦅

Birding capital

The Kumana Villu wetland is one of Asia's great nesting sites. If you care about birds, Kumana wins.

🐆

Honest about leopards

Yala has the higher leopard rate. Kumana's odds are rising — but we'll never promise a sighting.

🚙

Easy access

Kumana is under an hour from the east coast. Yala is a longer drive — but worth it for classic action.

Half-day or full-day

Kumana half-day has clear rates. Yala and full-day trips are by quotation. Always a private jeep — never shared.

Questions travellers ask

Will I see a leopard?

Leopards are present in both parks and sightings are becoming more common, but they are never guaranteed on any single drive. When a leopard is found in Kumana, you often have it to yourself.

What animals will I actually see?

You can reliably expect water buffalo, spotted deer, wild boar, crocodiles, and peacocks. Elephants are seen on most drives. There are 255+ bird species. Leopards and sloth bears are the lucky sightings.

Kumana or Yala — which should I choose?

Choose Kumana for quiet, world-class birdwatching. Choose Yala if your top priority is the highest possible chance of a leopard, and you don't mind more jeeps.

Is food included?

We bring coconut water and bottled water. Food isn't included — bring your own snacks or lunch, or ask us to arrange options inside the park.

How do I book and pay?

Booking is by WhatsApp — tell us your dates and group and we'll confirm. Payment details are shared when you book.

Is it suitable for kids and families?

Yes — children love the open jeep. Keep in mind tracks inside the park are rough and bumpy, which can be tiring for very young children or anyone with back trouble.
